Suspect died of overdose while in deputies’ custody in Broward
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office reports that on Thursday morning, a man died while in their custody near a cemetery in the Washington Park area of unincorporated Broward County.
A spokesperson for the Broward Sheriff’s Office named Gerdy St. Louis issued a statement in which she said that officers were responding to a report of a sexual assault at around one in the morning near the Lauderdale Memorial Gardens.
According to St. Louis, deputies were able to identify a suspect, and they were able to take him into custody near the junction of Northwest 27th Avenue and Sistrunk Boulevard.
“The subject suffered a medical episode and became unresponsive. Deputies administered Narcan and initiated CPR. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took over medical efforts,” St. Louis wrote.
An opioid overdose may be quickly reversed with the use of Narcan, which is also known as Naloxone. According to St. Louis, employees from Fire Rescue transported him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was declared deceased by a doctor upon arrival.
