Suspect taken into custody for fatally shooting Colorado police officer
ARVADA, Colo. — The Arvada Police Department said on Sunday that a police officer was shot and killed in the city of Arvada, Colorado, while authorities were trying to stop a large-scale domestic fight.
According to the police, both the suspect and another person who was hurt in the incident were taken to the hospital, and both were expected to live.
According to a statement released by the police, Officer Dillon Michael Vakoff, 27, and another officer were attempting to separate “many aggressive and argumentative people” at the time when the suspect shot a female victim. The cops and the suspect engaged in a firefight with their firearms.
A hospital pronounced Vakoff brain dead and closed his case.
In the United States military, Vakoff had the rank of staff sergeant. After completing his service in the Air Force, which lasted for six years, he joined the Arvada Police Department in the year 2019. According to a statement released by the police, he was undergoing training to become a SWAT officer. In the year 2012, Vakoff received his high school diploma from Arvada.
“This is a tragic loss to this community, to this department, but most significantly to his family and loved ones,” the police department said in a social media post. “His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
