Biden administration reactivates the free test kit program as part of plans to prevent a COVID-19 surge this winter
The holidays are a time when people usually have more time off from work and want to spend quality time surrounded by friends and family, which can also make them more likely to travel. Although traveling during the holidays can be a fun and enjoyable experience, with COVID-19 still circulating and the additional two respiratory viruses, RSV and influenza, that are threatening the healthcare system, we cannot be completely relaxed.
It is well known that with people’s gatherings indoors during the winter season, viruses tend to spread more, contributing to an increased number of infections. In order to prevent another COVID-19 surge this winter, officials encouraged people to wear face masks and get the updated boosters in the past period, but those attempts seem to have been in vain because the number of people who obtained the updated booster was not at the required level.
Another way to prevent COVID-19 from putting strains on the hospitals like it did in the earlier waves of the virus and to contain the cases through the holidays was to offer free COVID-19 at-home test kits to U.S. households. Therefore, after a three-month hiatus, the Biden administration decided to reactivate the free test kit program.
Earlier this week, officials announced during a press conference that each household could get four COVID-19 rapid tests delivered to their door. However, the free-at-home test kits are limited, so it is recommended that you make your reservation as soon as possible. You can place your order through covid.gov/tests, and you will get them delivered to your home starting tomorrow, December 19, by USPS.
COVID-19 tests may also be obtained at health facilities and certain pharmacies around the United States at a lower cost or even for free, making them accessible to everyone in the country, even those without health insurance. For additional information, please visit covid.gov/tests.
