Eagle Scout project helps public keep beach clean

Pompano Beach – Eagle Scout Patton Horton lives in Tamarac and belongs to Troop 497 in Coral Springs, but the lack of beach in those cities is Pompano’s gain.
Horton, who became an Eagle Scout on March 22, recently completed his Eagle Scout service project here – a beach cleanup unit, located next to The Great Lawn, with buckets that can be used by the public to collect trash when they go to the beach.
“Do your part to keep these shores pristine. While you stroll along the beach, grab a bucket to pick up debris. Once you’ve finished, you may dispose of the trash in the bin. Please return the buckets,” reads the sign on the unit.
“People have been using it,” said Horton. “I’ve seen people carry the buckets . . . and return the buckets.”
Horton doesn’t expect the entire beach to be cleaned because of his efforts but he hopes it will help and serve as a reminder that people shouldn’t litter.
“I figured it would be a nice thing to add . . . Pompano Beach was one of my first choices and they responded quickly.”
Horton thanked his mother, Vickie Vaden, his troop and others who helped get his project approved and completed: Mayor Rex Hardin, Assistant City Manager Earl Bosworth and Solid Waste Operations Manager Russell Ketchem.
