Florida reports 7,468 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, 142 more resident deaths

Florida health officials confirmed 7,486 additional cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and another 142 resident deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus.

The state has now verified 1,771,359 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began and 27,599 resident deaths, according to the department of health.

Another 459 non-residents have died in Florida from COVID-19, and there have been at least 74,267 resident hospitalizations attributed to the virus in the state since the start of the outbreak.

Deaths verified in the past day include 15 in Miami-Dade County, 12 in Broward County and one in Monroe County.

Florida has now verified at least 187 cases of the COVID-19 variant that emerged from Britain and is believed to be a more contagious strain. That’s the highest number for any state in the country, according to the CDC.

At least 1,951,940 vaccines have been administered in Florida, with 627,235 people in the state getting both shots that are needed. Miami-Dade has had 193,278 vaccinations, Broward has had 158,653 and Monroe 7,606, according to the latest numbers posted by the state.

The statewide positivity rate on yesterday’s testing was 6.25%.

Latest totals

Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 cases reported is more than 105.6 million. There have been more than 2.3 million deaths worldwide attributed to the pandemic, according to data compiled from various sources by Johns Hopkins University.

The United States has confirmed over 26.8 million cases and has had more than 461,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest totals in the world.
