Four families displaced after a fire in northwest Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – In the early hours of Monday morning, a fire broke out on the northwestern side of Miami-Dade County.

A number of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were sent to the scene of an early morning fire that broke out shortly before 4:15 a.m. in the vicinity of Northwest Second Avenue and 156th Street.

After being forced out of their houses, residents were seen sitting outdoors.

According to the testimony of one resident, he awoke to the smell of smoke and the sound of people yelling “Fire!”

“I was sleeping and I heard somebody call ‘fire!’ but in Creole,” Riverly Dorteny said. “I smell something funny, I get up, I grab my phone and I went outside — the only thing I was able to get is only these jeans.”

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, when firefighters arrived at the scene, they saw heavy smoke pouring from one of the units located inside the single-story building.

More than 15 fire units worked together to get the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to surrounding residences.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The origin of the fire is now the subject of an inquiry.

The American Red Cross is helping four different families who have been displaced as a result of the incident.
