Gulf Coast Landfill will be used as debris disposal site

FORT MYERS, Fla. — As Lee County continues to explore methods to get rid of the trash left behind by Hurricane Ian, a landfill that has been closed will temporarily reopen.

The use of the Gulf Coast Landfill as a place for the disposal of waste was approved by the commissioners on Tuesday.

The property, which was abandoned in 2007, is situated close to the junction of Colonial Boulevard and State Road 82, will be managed by Waste Management from this point forward.

According to the officials of the city, the reopening of the landfill would reduce the amount of miles that garbage trucks have to go. It will not be used for the disposal of residential rubbish or waste from horticulture, but rather just for the disposal of debris.

In order to lessen the visual impact of the piles on the surrounding community, WM will construct berms. Only during the hours of daylight will operations take place, as promised, so as to cause the least amount of disturbance to the surrounding community.
