Jacksonville’s first responders received a bonus of $1,000 each

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Monday, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel each received a bonus of $1,000 thanks to the visit of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who was in town for the occasion.

During a press conference that took place in the afternoon at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center, DeSantis said that the incentives are only a small way to show support and thanks for the service that our first responders provide.

“Because we know how hard you guys have been working, you know, and it’s always a tough job, but particularly since COVID,” DeSantis said.

JFRD Chief Keith Powers was the first to speak, but we also got to hear from firefighting veteran Chris Stover, who summed up the significance of the act for his family by describing it as a game-changer.

“I have an amazing wife and two young kids, and we’re thankful for this bonus to help with the cost of supporting our family,” Stover said. “Whether it’s supplies or clothes for school, a fall trip with family or gifts during the holiday season, this money definitely helps ease those costs. On behalf of myself and all first responders, we thank you for your continued support.”

The governor approved a budget that included funding for these payments earlier this year. The first responder recognition bonus program gives rewards to people who work for local governments in the state as police officers, sheriff’s deputies, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, or firefighters.

This is DeSantis’ second consecutive year of providing bonuses.
