JEA will begin turning off customers’ electricity as moratorium on disconnection costs and late fees expires
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Monday, JEA will start the process of turning off the electricity to thousands of customers.
This is due to the fact that the moratorium on late fees and disconnection orders ended on Sunday.
The power company initiated the grace period in July in order to assist customers who were having difficulty making their payments.
According to JEA, the months of July and August often see utility costs that are at their highest point.
However, the heads of the utilities companies are proposing some long-term assistance. JEA will no longer charge its customers any fees beginning next month for using a credit or debit card.
As long as you have a history of timely payments, the corporation will repay deposits after only one year rather than the standard two years.
The end of the grace period comes at a time when many people in Jacksonville are still getting hit with very high bills.
“My JEA has gone up to about $150 more than I usually pay. I am already on low income due to my disability. It’s not fair!” one customer said.
“My bill is double what it should be, this is ridiculous! Total bill is $454 this month and we bumped our thermostat up to 80 degrees!!!
