Lee County will use a $2 million grant for Ian recovery in Punta Rassa area
FORT MYERS, Fla. — On Tuesday, the Lee County Board of Commissioners had a meeting to approve a list of items relating to funding for the recovery from Hurricane Ian.
A grant of two million dollars will be used by Lee County for the Punta Rassa area. The grant provides funding for repairs to navigation equipment like signs and buoys along the coves, as well as an assessment of any damage that may have been caused to the channels that boats use in the area.
The winds and floods caused by Ian not only caused damage to the land in Punta Rassa but also to the waterways that are used by boats. The county commissioners have noted that this results in a loss of revenue from tourism.
The West Coast Inland Navigation District is providing the funding. The funds will be used for activities like barge operations and channel dredging that aren’t covered by Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance.
Activities related to the project include the maintenance of navigational infrastructure, such as signs and buoys, and the marking of navigational hazards.
