Man discovers an inert hand grenade while collecting scrap metal in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, a man who was gathering scrap metal on Monday came upon what is thought to be an inactive hand grenade that he found by the side of a road.

At around seven o’clock in the evening, according to Lieutenant Beltz of the Sheriff’s Office, police were sent to the incident at the junction of West 23rd Street and North Myrtle Avenue.

Beltz said that the location had been secured. He said that a member of the Hazardous Device Unit had been alerted and had arrived at the location of the incident.

Out of an abundance of caution, the device was put into the detective’s hands, and they stored it in a safe location.
