Martin County corrections sergeant who allegedly assaulted an inmate will not be charged

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla.  — The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that a corrections sergeant who was facing criminal charges for allegedly assaulting an inmate would not be charged.

After being accused of assaulting a wheelchair-bound inmate on June 27, Stephen Piekara, who had been working for the sheriff’s office for the previous ten years, was put under arrest.

The medical staff at the correctional facility were required to provide treatment for the inmate since he had sustained three contusions to the head.

In a statement, Sheriff William Snyder said that Piekara could go back to work on Friday, even though an internal investigation into the incident is still going on.

The authorities did not explain why the battery charges were dropped.

The sheriff has said that he is unable to make any additional comments about the case.
