Officer shoots a suspect in Hollywood
Hollywood, Florida – According to the Hollywood Police Department, a police officer shot a suspect once in the lower back.
Deanna Bettineschi, a spokeswoman for the department says the shooting was about 11:10 a.m., Saturday at 5200 Hollywood Blvd.
According to Bettineschi, the officer was helping Hollywood Fire Rescue personnel with “a combative subject” and the officer discharged a firearm during a struggle.
Officials say Fire Rescue transported the injured suspect, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, to Memorial Regional. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
The Hollywood Police Department is mourning the loss of Detective Jon Cooke, a 23-year veteran who was a part of the city’s burglary, domestic violence, and violent crimes unit.
According to officials, Cooke, also a U.S. Army veteran, was slated to become the department’s next Task Force Officer for the FBI’s violent crimes unit. He served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division from 1988 to 1992.
