Ron DeSantis wins re-election in Florida
MIAMI — Ron DeSantis, a Republican, will serve another term as governor of Florida after winning re-election by the state’s voters. Charlie Crist, a former Democratic congressman who had previously held the position of Republican governor of Florida more than a decade earlier, was an opponent for Ron DeSantis in this election, but DeSantis was able to prevail over him.
The victory went to DeSantis by a margin of about 20 points. And he did it by winning the traditionally Democratic counties of Palm Beach and Miami-Dade, both of which he carried to victory. In Tampa, where he was celebrating his triumph, he referred to it as “a win for the ages.” In front of the crowd, DeSantis said, “We not only won the election, we have rewritten the political map.”
With this triumph, DeSantis has secured a second term and a national platform as he eyes a potential run for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In his first run for governor, he received support from Donald Trump, who was serving as president at the time.
The victory of DeSantis is another piece of evidence that Florida, which has historically been seen as a swing state, is now firmly under the grip of Republicans. It has been over a quarter of a century since a Democrat was chosen to serve as governor of Florida.
