Study shows around 4 million Americans out of work due to long COVID

According to research that was just released this week by the Brookings Institution, there may be around 4 million people in the United States who are unable to find jobs as a result of the long COVID.

This might amount to at least 170 billion dollars worth of lost earnings annually, according to the findings of the report,

According to federal data, approximately 12 million Americans worked full-time or the equivalent of full-time hours prior to receiving long COVID.

From there, it estimated the number of individuals who had to give up their jobs or work less as a direct result of continuing health problems brought on by their COVID infection. The research used the definition of long COVID from the Household Pulse Survey conducted by the Census Bureau. This definition states that long COVID is described as symptoms that last for three months or more and were not present prior to COVID.

A number of studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine the effect that long Covid has on employment. According to an estimate that was published in a working paper by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis last month, by the middle of the year 2021, 26% of workers who had long Covid were either unemployed or working fewer hours. According to the findings of a worldwide study, 22% of people with long COVID were no longer working because to their illness, and 45% of people worked reduced hours as of the year 2020. A survey conducted in the United Kingdom indicated that between April and May 2021, 16% of people with long Covid had reduced hours, and 20% of people were on paid sick leave.
